Sad Statistics

Little more than one-third of high school seniors now read proficiently.

American adults of virtually all education levels are reading less
well than in the previous decade.

Employers now rank reading and writing as top deficiencies in new hires.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg....

I am not surprised to hear about this. What with reality shows and junk TV, who would want to read? And with American English taking a drastic turn for the worse where kids spell potato with and e at the end, where using 'rather then' is the norm compared to 'rather than'...oh I could go on and on. Children are not encouraged to read classics anymore. Sadly Bermuda, being a Brit territory, is also following the American trend, due to its close geographical proximity. I did a post on this a while back. Check out: http://underthebermudasun.blogspot.com/2007/02/do-you-speak-american.html

Firefox is not letting me open up that link - something about a risk...

You should see some of the exams I grade- and I'm dealing with adults.
It's shocking, really.

I've had some that were so illegible/incoherent that I had to have them verbally read their answers to me.
Sad.
